Sunlight There (in progress)
30 light sensors, electronic display, documents, dimensions variable, 2025
How can the distribution of light in the vast physical world be charted? How might we imagine our personal connection to light? Through the act of “ineffective” mapping, I aim to explore the individuality of how we come to understand the world. By accumulating large amounts of useless, non-quantifiable data, I hope to strip the data of its utilitarian purpose and instead extract its abstract visual, auditory, and symbolic qualities—as expressive traces of sunlight. Thirty light sensors will be installed at fixed locations, regularly transmitting data on ambient light levels. If a passerby happens to discover one of the devices, they can scan a QR code on it to upload a description of the light's intensity along with a word or phrase representing their current feeling. These contributions will be collected and displayed in the exhibition space.
